Breaking Cycles & Leading with Core Values

One of the most profound realizations in leadership—and in life—is recognizing when we are repeating cycles that no longer serve us. In Latina Mic Drop Episode 19: Ink, Scars & Soul – How Core Values Rewrite Our Story, I share a deeply personal moment when I had to make a critical decision: continue the patterns of my past or be the change for my future.

Recognizing the Patterns That Hold Us Back

As leaders, professionals, and individuals striving for success, we often don’t realize how deeply ingrained habits, fears, and societal conditioning shape our choices. Whether it’s staying in a job that doesn’t align with our purpose, tolerating toxic environments, or avoiding risk out of fear, we unconsciously repeat cycles that keep us stuck.

In the episode, I recall the moment I saw myself walking a path I had vowed to leave behind. My upbringing had taught me about struggle, about scarcity, about the weight of responsibility. But when faced with a tough decision, I had to ask myself: Am I going to keep this pattern alive, or am I going to break it?

How Core Values Guide Leadership

Our core values are our compass. They guide our decisions, define our leadership, and shape our legacy. The challenge? Many of us haven’t taken the time to clearly define them.

If you’re unsure where to start, here’s a simple exercise:

  1. Reflect on Your Defining Moments: Think of a time when you felt the most fulfilled and another when you felt out of alignment. What values were present or missing?
  2. Identify Your Non-Negotiables: What are the top five values that you refuse to compromise on, no matter what?
  3. Apply Them to Your Leadership: Take one decision you’re facing right now and ask: Does this align with my core values? If not, how can you pivot?

Actionable Steps to Lead With Intention

  1. Get Clear on Your Why – Understanding why you do what you do creates an unshakable foundation for decision-making.
  2. Say ‘No’ to What No Longer Serves You – Boundaries are leadership in action. If a job, relationship, or habit doesn’t align, release it, but take the necessary action to prepare to set your boundaries. Saying “no” is the start. It’ll take time for people to adjust to the new reality.
  3. Step Into Your Power – No more playing small. If you recognize a cycle that needs to be broken, be the one to break it.
