Emerge from Emergency: Breaking Free from Survival Mode to Step into Your Power

Have you been feeling like you’re constantly in emergency mode, running from one crisis to another? I see you. I’ve been there too, and today I want to share how I stepped out of that whirlwind into a life of intention and peace.

As I launch my new book “Tattoos and Pearls: Combining Street Wisdom with Corporate Strategy,” I’m reflecting on my own journey from constant crisis to conscious leadership. Let me guide you through what I’ve learned.

Survival Mode Isn’t a Personality

For years, I thought being constantly on edge was just who I was, hyper-vigilant, hyper-productive, always in defense mode. I’d work through lunch, skip breakfast, and put everyone else’s needs before my own. I’d come home starving after a full day of meetings only to drive my kids around or take care of household tasks before finally eating.

I remember the day everything changed. I was coming home, exhausted and famished, when my daughter called asking for a ride. Instead of automatically saying yes, I said, “Not today. I need to take care of some errands.” I stopped, bought myself dinner, and sat down to eat it properly. And guess what? Everyone survived. The world kept turning.

Survival mode isn’t your personality, it’s a trauma response. When you recognize it for what it is, you can begin to make different choices.

From Sidelined to Center Stage

Have you ever felt invisible in your workplace or even in your own life? I spent years being the person behind the scenes, doing all the work while others took the credit. I was taught culturally to be the last person to eat, the one who makes sure everyone else is taken care of first.

I carried this pattern into my professional life too, always being the team player who picked up the slack but never asking to lead the project or present the results. I wasn’t getting credit for my work, and worse, I wasn’t using my voice or developing my leadership skills.

Learning to take up space wasn’t easy. It meant setting boundaries, advocating for myself, and sometimes saying “no” to requests that drained my energy without moving me forward. It meant writing my own narrative instead of waiting for someone else to choose it for me.

Emergency Exit: Knowing When to Let Go

Sometimes the emergency exit is the plan. When leadership changes, culture shifts, or the rules of the game transform completely, you have choices: adjust, find a way to thrive in the new environment, or create an exit plan.

I want to be clear, there’s a difference between quitting and choosing yourself. When I felt sidelined after losing an executive sponsor, I didn’t walk away from my organization. Instead, I channeled my energy into new avenues where I could thrive: authoring a book, contributing to Forbes, launching this podcast.

I stopped seeking approval from people who couldn’t see my value and started creating spaces where I could fully express my gifts. That’s not quitting, that’s strategic redirection.

The Rebirth Ritual

As a highly emotional person with abundant energy, I needed practices to ground myself. Through my coaching training, I realized I wasn’t fully present with others because I was always racing to the next thought, the next task, the next emergency.

Now, I have rituals that help me reset:

  • Breathing exercises before meetings or podcasts
  • Journaling when emotions feel bottled up
  • Meditation and grounding exercises
  • Community support through group calls
  • Regular check-ins with myself

These practices help me navigate challenges and new experiences without falling back into survival mode. They’ve taught me to be present, to process my emotions, and to find clarity even in difficult situations.
